I just have to say, Hint Fiction is an awesome concept. I submitted two entries to your contest yesterday, and tweeted this site this morning. I hope this turns big for you, like PostSecret did for that Frank guy. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Oh, and #hintfic makes a good hashtag. Just sayin'...

Thanks, Daniel. I actually used to work as an editor at a horror/dark fantasy magazine years back, so reading slush is nothing new. In fact, it's just like riding a bike ... ;-)

Jonny, my goal now is to hit 2,000 stories. That would be nice.

I never understood how difficult an editor's job was until I undertook editing an anthology of L.A. fiction by Latino writers. The process started with a call for submissions in 2005. Including a few pieces I tapped from authors I knew, I ended up with over 200,000 words of fiction within a few months. I read every piece and chose only those that "knocked my socks off." No clunkers or "sort ofs" in my anthology. I eventually ended up with abut 115,000 words of fiction. The anthology was published in 2008 and received nice notices. It has or will be taught at fine institutions such as Rutgers, UC Irvine, Ohio State, and others. But it will be a long time before I undertake such an effort again. It's way easier submitting my manuscripts to other editors. I note that one of the best things about working as an editor has been getting to know "my" authors particularly when we get together for group readings. In the end, Robert, this will be a fulfilling endeavor for you, no doubt.

1 down 3 to go. And if you have 246 in the “maybe" pile, then basically it will be mission accomplished.
Surely at least half of them will be good, at least to with some work, to get into the anthology and make it brilliant.
