The Amazon and Lulu POD options also sell ebooks, though I don't know if you can choose to exclusively sell ebooks off hand—either way, both avenues allow authors to put their work in those channels without the know-how to format a Word document accordingly by using their services for free.

So, few people need these guys for that. Now, if they also do PR and whatnot, that's another story. After calling themselves publishers, I certainly hope they do.

A really excellent post-- things I've been thinking of for quite some time, too. As in what is this mystical production cost going to, and how is it necessary in today's world.

I do think that many things are best left to professionals. But like you're saying, how hard is it to find one for yourself these days, if you don't happen to have one hanging around already?

You've read my mind and cobbled my incoherent thoughts into something worth reading. The victory, in this race, goes to the versatile, and if an author doesn't have the time to learn the simple task of e-formatting their book, well...the digital world might not need him/her/it.
