Boy does this post hit home. I'm getting ready to go into seclusion for the next 6 weeks (yeah, got a conference coming up and must be ready to pitch) to focus on 'the novel'. Need to, want to, but the web sucks me in to read fine ditties like your 2k 'tome' (nice). Off to climb the mountain to the monastary on top...

I view shorts and poetry as both writing practice (hey, economy travels well to novels) and promotion. Thanks for the quote from Pullman -- I'll be borrowing that later this week. Peace, Linda

Charles - I view all short fiction in general as promotion. It's the best advertisement for you. If a reader is impressed with your story, they're more than apt to pick up your book, so that's always a good thing. But yeah, it takes a lot of time.

Madeline - I haven't actually started the book yet. I'm currently reading a friend's manuscript. But HORNS is next on my list. I'd just wanted to change the book cover from what was there before because I could not STAND The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. So very overrated, IMO.

I'm struggling with this myself. I love flash fiction - its immediacy, its control, it's something I can start and finish. Novel revisions are so unweildy and the ending is far from in sight. I'm trying to balance both but I'm having a hard time.

Are you enjoying the new Joe Hill book? I've got it on my list to read - liked his other ones.

Congrats on "Point of View" - I enjoyed it.

It's so hard to budget your time between writing and promotion. I look at flash fictions as promoting at times, since it gets my name out there. But I often feel like writing is two full time jobs, the writing and the promoting. I'm trying to say no to more things these days, but the number of requests I get for stuff continues to climb so I'm not actually saving myself a lot of time it seems.
