Flossing Sharp Teeth

I just finished reading Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow, and boy oh boy what a great book. It's like nothing I ever read before, a horror thriller written in free verse. In fact, the style is what really makes this book unique. After the first few pages, you hardly even notice it anymore. Some of it reminds me of James Frey, that stream of consciousness writing, but it's very lyrical at times:

There's blood everywhere, but it's the creatures at the edge, licking the corner of the ruby pool, that hold your curiosity. So get this straight it's not the full moon. That's as ancient and ignorant as any myth. The blood just quickens with a thought a discipline develops so that one can self-ignite reshaping form, becoming something rather more canine still conscious, a little hungrier. It's a raw muscular power, a rich sexual energy and the food tastes a whole lot better.

As well as suspenseful:

Closing her eyes and breathing deep, concentrating, she can now hear the dog's soft breath just outside the door. She measures this moment, weighing the fear and the quickening sense of desperation, knowing that no matter what happens next, so much is ending. She times her moves fast, sliding the gun out, squinting deep for the moment that is ripe to explode one, two, three--- she pulls open the door full and fast falling back as sure enough the dog lunges in fierce and snarling. So first she fires one very loud bullet directly into the dog's skull sending him down empty and sudden. Then, as the delivery girl leaps over, screaming shrill, she jams the pistol into that open shout of a mouth and pulls the trigger again.

Granted, the book won't appeal to every reader, both in form and subject ... though who can't resist werewolves in Los Angeles? I know I can't.

Me Reading "The Dry Patch"

In case you missed it when it played live (and I wonder if anyone actually did see it that way), here's the video of my reading. I brought four stories along, and until I sat down I wasn't sure which to read ... as evidenced by my hurried shuffle. I ended up going the dark and morbid route with "The Dry Patch." The sound is pretty crappy, and the video quality is poor, so deal with it (I don't think it will come through on Google Reader and the like, so click here in case it doesn't appear below). Have a great weekend. http://qik.com/video/7424402

Motownphilly Back Again

As a reminder I’ll be participating in a reading at Big Blue Marble Bookstore tonight between 7-9 pm along with Barry Graham, Randall Brown, Curtis Smith, Scott Oliver, Drew Kalbach, Daniel Wallace, and Peter Schwartz. Thank you to Lisa and Jeff D. for humoring me last week and suggesting I read "Superman's Dead." I was all for it until I actually tried to read that story out loud and realized that because it's second person it will most likely be too confusing.

So what will I read? I'm not sure yet. But remember if all goes according to plan, my wife will be coming with me and will videotape my reading using the Qik application on my phone, so anyone can view it live on my Qik page. I’ll post something on Twitter and Facebook a few minutes before it goes live. When exactly, I don’t know, but sometime between 7 and 9.

Of course, if you are in the area, stop by!

I Was Soooooo Wrong

Remember how yesterday I said I wouldn't be surprised if no big special guests showed up at Conan O'Brien's show near Philadelphia? Well, the man's mega star power does not disappoint. The opening act was Reggie Watts, who was friggin' hilarious. Check out this satirical music video that may not be for everyone, considering that it's called "Fuck Shit Stack." Then sometime later Trey Anastasio came out, whose name didn't mean anything to me as I've never been a Phish fan, but he played a song, plus appeared again when everyone came out for two more songs for the encore. But the highlight of the evening is without a doubt when Conan brought out the Chuck Norris Lever, which he said legally he could no longer call the Chuck Norris Lever, so he called it something else, and to help him, he introduced the one and only Tina Fey:

So yeah. Good times, good times.

Attention, Attention

Tonight my wife and I head down to Philly to see Conan O'Brien on one of his many stops on his tour. We're big fans of Conan, saw him live many times when he was doing Late Night in New York, and once, because we were in the front row, I even got to shake his hand when he came out before the show to greet the audience (yeah, that's right). There have been special guest appearances all along this tour (Jim Carrey appeared twice, once dressed at Superman, another time as Kick Ass), but I won't be surprised if there are no wild special guests at this show (I mean, who mega famous lives around Philadelphia?). Doesn't matter, though, because it's friggin Conan O'Brien!!!

I didn't post a Freaky Friday Fun video last week, mostly because I couldn't find anything I liked, but also because I'm starting to become bored with the whole thing. Maybe I'll keep it up, maybe I'll abandon it completely, but for the time being here's a video of Conan's show when he was in New York City and Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart popped up on stage:
